When to replace the Bottom Bracket?

My BB has developed a click and there is some lateral movement when pulling on the crank arms, the bearings are on the way out. I've just bought a replacement.
Question is should I keep running the old one until it is further gone? Or is there a likelihood that it may seize up when out on a ride? Only got 800 miles out of the existing one so it would save a few pounds if I run it for a bit longer to eek out some miles but I don't want to get stranded on a long ride somewhere.
Do BB's go terminal or just gradually get worse?
Cheers

if it has play i would replace."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

The play in the cranks and BB may end up affecting other conponents, replacing is probally best thing to do.0
