Bottom Bracket Size

I need to change the bottom bracket and crankset on my hybrid, but I am confused about sizing...

Is the bottom bracket size (length) governed by the chainset?

i.e. can I ignore the size of the current one and just choose to match the crankset I decide upon?

I know this is a basic question but I have had conflicting advice so I am confused!

    basically you are correct.

    but again with some there is no option.

    Thanks, after searching for a new crankset I am confused again - many say 9 speed compatible, 10 speed compatible etc.

    I have 7 speed cassette so is it OK to use a 10 speed compatible crankset (I guess this is to do with narrow chains on the higher number of gears...?)
