Hi all,

thanks in advance for any help and tips that anyone offers up........This is my first post on the site, I'm not overly new to bikes and riding but I have recently started taking it a bit more seriously now that I cycle to work.

I currently own a Carrera Kraken 2013 model, I want to get a few bits a pieces to make it more suitable for the road riding I do (I know I should've brought a road bike), anyway Im after a set of pedals and shoes to ride with however I'm completely new to this as I usually just ride in trainers.

Can anyone recommend any entry level pedals and shoes that aren't crazy expensive to make a start with and then if I get on with them I'm happy to upgrade. I have been thinking of getting the Shimano M424 pedals as this are suitable for both shoes and normal trainers.

Any pointers......

Cheers

  • Personally ran M530 pedals on a road bike for a year commuting and found them great
I'll warn you that once you've used spd clip in's for a while you'll hate riding on the road with trainers....much harder work
If your budget allows id go for shoes with a buckle fastener on top rather than velcro/laces
  • I'd really avoid the M424 pedals, I bought some for my MTB when I started commuting and they were poor. The resin cage flexed every time I unclipped and popped the bearing end cap out. I sent them back and replaced them with m520s and never looked back. I wouldn't bother with dual purpose pedals as they are a compromise which doesn't work ime. Either go for flats or SPD.

M520s are the way to go. You can get them with a plug in that holds orange reflectors, not only does the law demand this but I find that on country roads it aids visibility.
