Hi all,

thanks in advance for any help and tips that anyone offers up........This is my first post on the site, I'm not overly new to bikes and riding but I have recently started taking it a bit more seriously now that I cycle to work.

I currently own a Carrera Kraken 2013 model, I want to get a few bits a pieces to make it more suitable for the road riding I do (I know I should've brought a road bike), anyway Im after a set of pedals and shoes to ride with however I'm completely new to this as I usually just ride in trainers.

Can anyone recommend any entry level pedals and shoes that aren't crazy expensive to make a start with and then if I get on with them I'm happy to upgrade. I have been thinking of getting the Shimano M424 pedals as this are suitable for both shoes and normal trainers.

Any pointers......

Cheers

Caged spds are the worst of both worlds.

Caged SPD are not designed for riding with trainers , you would get away with a ride around the block but expect your feet to slip . The M424 is a good starter pedal offering some extra support , caged or un-caged is down to personal preferences.

Good grippy flat pedals can be had relatively cheaply. Wellgo MG1 flats are about £30 and some water resistant walking shoes with a stiff grippy sole from the likes of Sports Direct for another £30 or so will do for most riding up to 3 or 4 hours or so. If your set on SPD type get some Shimano 520 pedals and cheap cycling shoes to try them out SPD doesnt suit all and you wont have wasted a lot of money if its not for you. Road type SPDs should be avoided unless your doing racing they are horrible to walk in unlike MTB SPD shoes.
