RS80 rim replacement - or tub build

After a good innings, my RS80s need to be replaced and I've a few options. The wheels will be used mainly for training on my race bike and I'm after either a straight rim replacement, or to use the hubs and build some tubulars.

So my questions:
1 - anyone know where a reasonably priced set of RS80 rims can be found?
2 - any suggestions for 16/20 hole tubular rims (not carbon!)? 16/20 so I can reuse the RS80 hubs.

Suggestions greatly appreciated!

EDIT: Just found these (http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cole/t24-alloy-700c-16-hole-tubular-rim-ec028914. Any users out there?

  • 1) No, they are all pricey. Madison price the set at 300 pounds (or 150 per rim), add labor and you are looking at the same price of a new set (or more)

    2) No, you need a carbon rim for a decent build at that spoke count... besides, it will be hard to find straight pull spokes of the correct length... you are probably looking at binning everything... a new set will be cheaper than a rebuild

I doubt you'll find a builder who wants to build the Cole rim... never heard of it and we tend to be quite weary of what we build... just in case it turns out to be a crap wheel... :?

Thanks for the reply (although not the news I was hoping for :( ) - I'd only seen/heard of replacement RS80 rims that were eye-wateringly expensive...I was hoping someone would have other suggestions.

    Cheers,

  • I can't be very adventurous on these things, but others might have botch-up solutions...

Any suggestions for a decent (300-400 pounds) tubular wheelset (alu brake track) with a rim that could be replaced at a reasonable cost?
  • My favourite are Ambrosio Nemesis, as used by PRO for Paris-Roubaix up to 4-5 years ago... you can have them built on Ultegra hubs for something around 350. They only come as 32 holes, no less... but they are seriously nice to ride!

Alternatively Kinlin TB 25 come in all drillings, including 20 and 24 and if built on Miche hubs, you are looking at something in the region of 230-240, or you can get Hope PRO 3 hubs for around 350 or so...

Velocity make the Escape rims, but I don't think the distributor import a lot of them...

I know Ambrosio Nemisis rims, they're great. I'm assuming you'd be able to build a set for me...?

you can get RS80 rims for £128 per rim here:

not that reasonable when you add in labour costs and spokes etc, esp as you can get a new pair of RS80s for £320 here
