I'm looking to do my first event in the next few weeks and I'm getting a calendar of dates together for the winter. Only problem is I'm not sure which one I should/can enter as a complete beginner.

Can anyone help?

Largely depends on what choices are offered by your local league. If you are a senior, enter the seniors. If you are a vet, enter the vets, and so on/so forth. After about 10 minutes of racing, you won't even know what day of the week it is, so your category will become irrelevant.

    Ah, ok.

What about when it says things like "Cat B" and "CX Band 4"?

I'm seeing that on the British Cycling website next to some events for Senior or Vet Mens races.

    Any ideas??

That just relates to the status of the event, not to the category of rider.

So there's no danger of me ending up in some elite race by accident?

Not unless you enter one of the national trophy rounds. Most local leagues are categorised by age group, ie junior, senior, vet, etc. Some leagues may have a novice class, in which case do that. Otherwise, just enter whichever category you qualify for.
