    If you have ridden 25 years, I am sure at the time you did have internal can skewers, as they are the only ones that work with horizontal or diagonal dropouts as they were used at the time. Vertical dropouts only hit the market in the 90s.
    Vertical dropouts are normally happy with external cam, that doesn't mean that any external cam on the market is good... in fact many are sxit, just you won't find out until you find out

    Oh yes, plenty of miles on internals without any problems, just the only set I have had a problem with were those. I'm trying to remember back to some of my early frames, definitely horizontal rear dropouts but the fork dropouts were always fairly vertical weren't they?

    Yes, but they did not have the retaining feature named lawyer's lip, hence if you attempt a "hop" with a crap 20 grams skewer you might end up with the wheel coming off with those older forks
