Compromise tyre?

14 year old is wearing out the Specialised branded tyres on his hardrock, particularly the rear (suspect much fun being had locking and skidding).

He rides mostly forest trail, singletrack etc, but also by necessity on the road, canal towpaths etc.

What would be a good compromise all rounder, ideally with decent durability?

(I know compromises are hard to recommend, but with the best will in the world, he's not yet at the stage where he can be bothered swapping tyres depending on the conditions!)

Get off road tyres, never mind the roads, it's a good workout.

land cruiser is a crappy tire which doesn't have much to do with mountain biking.

i'd recommend a 'Rapid Rob' or (rather) a 'Black Jack', they're hard wearing but good allround Schwalbe's.
The performance choice for omnious use is 'Rocket Ron' folding bead tire albeit more expensive to run and replace.

I used to have them 10 years ago, they were considered a good tyre back then.
Bontrager XR4 or Specialized Purgatory should do the job.

Lad who I ride with has them on his and loves them!! :-)
  • Schwalbe Landcruiser or CX Comp are ideal for what you're wanting. Both around £15 a tyre.
    Puncture protection is helpful too.
I did last weekends Lakeland monster miles on a set of CX Comps. 62 miles, about half on rocky, muddy, slippery rutted off-road trails and bog (nowt perticularly technical, but tough). No punctures, and the organisers have had excellent things to say about the landcruisers. Had a few wheelslip moments on steep muddy uphills, but that's more down to my lack of technique.

For a knobbly tyre the XC's roll fairly well on road, easily as good as a Ron for example, not as well as a slick obviously!
Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.

schwalbes tyre compounds are not great for tarmac - the nobbles won't last very long if you skid
