Cassette spacer required?

Do I need a spacer to put a 10 spd shimano deore cassette on to a superstar switch evo hub?
I've had it installed without the spacer and so far havn't noticed any problems, but I do hear the odd creaking/noise every now and again and wondered if this had anything to do with it

Hmm could well be, they've been under heavy use for the past four months. At least ridden everyday, with loads of all day sessions in between.
I havn't the foggiest how to change them however0
