Changing to a 2x9 setup

Hi,
I currently have a Stumpjumper Expert with a 3x9 setup. It makes a racket on downhills so i'd like to change it to a 2x9... but on a budget.
I plan to blank off the front derailleur so it only allows one click. My question regards the chainrings. The bashguard will replace the outer i guess but what would be sensible sizes for the remaining two? It's currently a standard hollowtech 3 ring model.
Would it be a good idea to replace the rear mech for a short cage option?
Any advice appreciated.

Just leave them and see. I've been happy with 22/32 with a 34 cassette for years. But I don't go that fast.I don't do smileys.

Will changing from 3x9 to 2x9 reduce the racket? You'll save a small amount of weight but thats all.Planet X Kaffenback 2

Only if you also change the rear derailleur for a mid-cage option (I don't think you can get away with a short cage if you're still running a double chainring) which effectively makes forward/backward movement of the cage slightly stiffer, but even then any reduction in noise is going to be fairly minimal - a decent neoprene chainstay protector will make a far larger difference, surely?0 -
Thanks for replies guys. Yes, i'm ordering a mid cage derailleur. I'll leave the front rings as is then and see how i get on. Cheers again!0

The smaller largest front ring will put the chain closer to the chainstay, not sure how that will help reduce the racket at all.......in fact likely to make it worse.Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

I put a chain guide on my Heckler for a 2x9 set up - used a E13 one - cant recall the model - changes the rattle to the rumble of the chain on the guide but definitely quieter - Kept the 2 rings as 22/32 as Cooldad says - 32 to 11 is Ok for most applications - spins out on road descents but I try to be off road when losing height. I had a bashring on their for rock/log protection.
A cluth mech might help noise but generally without chucking on something to tighten the chain up its still gonna slap. To be honest on my hardtail I run 3x9 and try to keep it in big front/mid back for descents and its not too noisy unless the going gets very rough.Closet jockey wheel pimp whore.0 -
Best add on i ever did was my X9 Type 2 mech (clutch style) so much quieter as it keeps the chain tension0

Yes, but not available for Greg's 9 speed so your point was........Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

seems a bit extreme just to stop a bit of noise.0
