I'm pretty new to MTBing, I'm normally a roadie. I've got a 29er with Geax Mezcal 2.1 tyres. I'm finding the tyres quiet slippy especially when it's wet. Do I just need to man up and cope with it or are there a lot more suitable tyres available, especially for the winter. I've also got tubeless ready rims, so should I go tubeless if I change?

Thanks

  • Check out Maxxis Beaver reviews.

Are perfect for my winter riding, might suit you as well.

Sorry, I don't know much about your current tyre.

  • Original bike tires are often cheap compound versions . The treads may look the same but the rubber compounds are different . My bike came with continental mountain king wire bead cheap jobs ( they slipped everywhere and I couldn't get climbing traction) . Went for bontrager xr4 team issue a much higher spec tyre and it's transformed the bike and my riding .

Best bet would be to contact a local shop , ,its what I did as they advised based on local conditions

Tubeless could help as you can run at lower pressures which gives a better footprint and grip.

Just had a quick google and locals favour bontrager mud x
  • On-One Smogasbord or Specialised Purgatory Control. As above, it's the compound that counts.

Cheers guy's I'm going to look at the on one tyres - not too expensive!
  • I have recently got some of them, £30 can't be bad for two dual compound tyres. They are actually made by Maxxis.

I cant get away from a Rocket ron on the front, just seems to work for general XC, I keep trying other things but end up coming back to it. I find the rear end less of a factor, unless its bogging I've used Ardents, XR3's & crossmarks, the back end can drift a bit, but I quite like that ... Ashton seems pretty weatherproof when i've ridden it, which is normally about now at the Octoberfest.
A berm? were you expecting one?

Ashton Court is all surfaced trail. Mud/wet weather tyres need mud to be able to dig in and grip so they don't work at Ashton Court. Something like Schwalbe Nobby Nics or Maxxis High Rollers will do the job.
I only ever ride Ashton Court when my local trails are a bog and even then Ashton has virtually no mud at all.
