Yeah I know, I could just use Trip Advisor, but thought I'd see if anyone had any personal recommendations.

Asking for a mate: needs to be mid-price range and central. I've advised him to stay away from anything directly on Las Ramblas.

Personally, I went for self catering.
Saved a fortune and just went to the market across the street for breakfast.
It was an eye opener as to how many locals had alcohol in their coffees for breakfast.
It was also an eye opener as how few drunks I saw.

Consumption and excess are not the same.
None of the above should be taken seriously, and certainly not personally.
  • I once stayed at the Pullman Barcelona Skipper, just by the beach of Barceloneta. Expensive, but I ate all the serrano ham on display for breakfast... 8)

Stayed at the Hotel Condes de Barcelona for a weekend a couple of years ago. It's a short walk from where the airport bus arrives in Plaza Catalunya, on the next corner from the Casa Mila. Booked it through one of the discount hotel websites and the price was good. We didn't eat there as we would get breakfast in a bar on our way out for the day and eat out wherever we were. Room was clean and comfortable and it was central enough without being too noisy. The tour buses that go around the city stop within spitting distance of the hotel.

I stayed at the Rivoli which was a decent hotel but is on La Ramblas so ruled out by the OP.

We stayed just outside the centre at the Vincci Maritimo (http://www.vinccihoteles.com/Hoteles/Es ... i-Maritimo) and used the Metro (nearest stop is 100 m away) to get in and out of the city and it was less than a 10 minute walk to a quiet area of beach with some nice beach bars.

Do him a favour warn him if anybody comes near him with a clipboard to just push them aside and walk on. Usually pretty girls but they work in a team while asking you a fake survey and stuff under the clipboard they are going through your pockets and taking your watch and stuff. Bcn is. Ow the pickpocket and theft capital of europe and the police have no idea how to combat it as the law is on their side. I can stand on any street in bcn and within five mins will spot a theft going on, i used to love it but going again next month but wil prob be my last time as too much grief all the time. Tell him to put everything well away as you will be amazed how cunning they are there.

I always use the trypp chain in bcn and as mentioned stay away from ramblas. And the old girl at the bottom of las ramblas that offers you a blow job for ten euros she means it! No i didnt but i know somebody who did :-(
