Newbie gear ratios

Hi all,
Complete cx newbie here. I am just in the process of building my first cyclocross bike. I have built my fair share of road and mtb over the years. However I have a question around gear ratios. What would be a good starting place? I run a compact and 11-25 10speed on my road bike.

What is a good option for a newbie cyclocrosser? A 1x10 ? 2x10? And what ratios?

    Is this for road use, or for CX racing?

    For road use, just use normal road gearing. For racing, I find that 42/34 and 12-26 gets me round most circuits.

    Cx racing, I am fine with my road bike setup. But completely new to CX so was hoping to get it somewhere near whilst building the bike and will obviously fine tune as i get into it.

    Or try a 36 (or 38) tooth single with 11-28 cassette.
