Hey All,

Well in the not to distant future i will be redundent i believe (Please spam comments about how i deserve and so on as this is the CC and we are taking it back apparently) so i will have some cash.

Looking at upgrades, wheels are on my list. So looking at some AM wheels that can take a bit of stick on an uplift day but are a ton wieght so i can pedal them normally ( i weigh 11stone wet so pretty light on stuff). my first thoughts at sub £450

Good weight and wide, so good for tyre profile. any other idea's.

I expect awful spam and good advice as posting outside the crud is pointless!

    That's like my obvious.

In all seriousness though, those wheels are carbon, they might melt in the rain. You'd only be able to use them as a summer wheel.

Its all very well going light, but what tyres/tube combination will you have?

This, although I have to admit that square ones have their advantages, if you stall going up hill you won't start rolling backwards for one thing.

All of those wheels are quite expensive because of where they're made.

If you asked the chinese, they wouldn't call that wheel advice.
  • Pretty sure that CWNT has Superstar wheels and he really liked them for the money. I don't think it's the set you linked to though. I would, but I'm not yet in the right place to be buying expensive items.

That said, my choice of wheels isn't great. Especially if I've leant Richie my bike!

Superstar, apparently you either get a really good set of wheels (for the price) or you get a shocking pair.

My rear wheel spokes ranged in tension from 0-21 N/m when they are supposed to range from 20-21 N/m.

I think there were two spokes correctly tensioned.

    It's a gamble

My superstar wheels were great, then pinged a rim and when they rebuilt it it was shocking, a blue run ride and it was like a pringle. Ok they sorted it foc but so annoying sending wheels back that were poorly built.

Other genuine advice I'd like to offer is

This is a mountain bike wheel
    sram_WHM197FB.jpg?w=350&h=350&a=7

    This is an ocelot
    ocelot_648_600x450.jpg

Don't buy an ocelot, they do not roll well, there will be frame clearance issues and they will scratch your retinas out when you try to put a maxle in it

To master the fitting process, you have to become the fiting process. So basically act like a pussy and you'll be fine. They can smell fear. Or they can smell of fear, either way.

    O'hai! :D

Yes, I've got some Tesla hubs with Arch EX rims, CX Ray spokes and apim SILS nipples. Can't remember exactly how much they were. I think about £350-£400 ish.

Weigh 1,650g with stans tape fitted and remained perfectly true and well tensioned for ages. I then left them sat for almost a year, before changing tires and fitting to a rigid bike (that's another thing, axle conversion is DEAD easy!). Within a 2 rides I'd snapped 3 spokes. They were snapping on flat sections and up fireroad climbs so not quite sure what the score was there. Make of that what you will.

    I'd buy them again though.

I'd be happy to do a trade for an Ocelot if you have one. I assume I can train it to eat Guinea Pigs?

Ahh I sold my last ocelot last night, I have got a second hand Caracal if you like, it won't eat a guinea pig but it will gently gnaw on a chinchilla

If it's a hedgehog you want to peel then I'd suggest a snowy leopard. They're single butted so they are a bit heavier but they're also more robust although they are only available in black/white colour way

valid point.....however another good all-rounder would be a dingo.... just watch it around babies..... like another well known aussie predator in the news right now

Any more wheel ideas? anyone anyone?

Still playing with the idea of just trading my dune in for the 2013 XR version really like it, just not as supple on the back, never ridden such a supple bike as my 2010 dune ever...

Ive had some bad SS wheels and some good ones. Oh no wait, they've all been bad. Hubs/Rims/Spokes etc. generally ok (although I have toasted a Tesla fairly quick). Build quality and longevity is always bad from my experience. Also, carbon rims look cool, but what do they really add? Better off with a decent set of alloy rims I say. Could have 2 pairs for the same price.
