Is this typical? It's pretty awful.

It's quite well documented that his position wasn't very aero. Between his 20 L lung capacity and large body, there were a few compromises.

His coaching staff were trying to get him lower - á la Boardman - (in the run up to his hour attempt, IIRC); he tried it for a while before saying "cohones to that for a game of soldiers - I'm going back to my old position..."

Indurain's TTposition?...somewhere far ahead of Armstrong

Why is he clutching a cockatiel on that photo?

Yeah, he never was that aero but made up for it by being a powerhouse!

With the amount of EPO he had sloshing around his system, his aerodynamics were of lesser importance.

He'd be more aero if he was riding now. Just look at some of the positions Boardman adopted over the years.
You only need two tools: WD40 and Duck Tape.
If it doesn't move and should, use the WD40.
If it shouldn't move and does, use the tape.

It's not surprising Chris Boardman has problems with back.

Everything is wrong about this pic. Bike, helmet, position. All hideous!

HA! Yes, that looks like a pimped up "ladies bike". A shopping basket on the front and it would balance it out a bit.

    20L?

I think there has been a misprint, or Indurain was not actually homo sapien.

Blatant exaggeration. 19.5L + RHR of about 3.5 BPM too.

Quick Google suggests it was 7.5l - which is more reasonable.

Interesting Wiki suggests rower Peter Reid has largest recorded lung capactity of 11.6l - he is 6'6" and 16st but that capacity sounds too much to believe.

Sir Matthew Pinsent had a capacious 8.5l which sounds more reasonable and human.

  • Yeah, I saw that 20L and thought "Eh? - I thought it was 8 or 9L".

As an aside, we measured our lung capacity in biology class when I was 12 or 13. I had the biggest at 5.5L.

Sheesh, I was being silly regarding his superhuman physique.
I'll exaggerate more next time so it's obvious. (Although I thought 20 was fairly obviously silly)

Doesn't look 6'6" to me

My next door neighbour's wife's lungs are magnificent and I would dearly love to measure them however my neighbor knows this and he's bigger than me.

Everybody beats Bjarne Riis as it was early days as he was just starting on EPO.

Bigger gear than others but his "Natural" strength was good enough to pedal fast.
