I am considering buying one of these Thule roof bike carriers, however, I can't quite get my head round what I actually need. :?

All I think I've worked out so far is a "proride 951" which I assume is the thing that the bike would sit in/on.

So what else do I need ? The bars themselves ?? A footpack, whatever the hell that is :?

I've been on the Thule website and it's all numbers to me, so, I have a Peugeot Partner, what do I need to put on said car so that I can stick my bike safely on the roof and drive off ??

Thanks in advance :D

The footpack that fits your car, and the bars that fit the footpack.

Oh how my heart sunk when I seen you had replied.

So I need a fitting kit to fit the car, a footpack to fit the kit, and bars to fit the footpack :?

Or just get a bit of rope, tie one end to the bike and the other to your bumper.

OK, I'll try and explain :)

You need 2 bars for your car (these come in a pack of two), and whilst bars from other manufacturers *might* fit, it is better to get Thule ones IMHO. Then you know everything will work and save yourself much swearing and reordering. Bars come in standard (square section) or aero. I have aero; they look nice and save a fraction on air resistance. The choice is yours.

To attach the bars to your car you need the feet. Two feet (one at each end of the bar) per bar, so 4 in total. These feet have a wind in clamp, which clamps the roof rails of your car, or the gutter. You will need to specify the correct type of feet for how you will clamp them to your car.

The feet should come with locks, so check that. That shops someone unclamping the how rack system and walking off with it.

The 591 unit then slots onto the bars. Make sure you get the lock kit for those too.

    Thats it!

    Jeez !!

So, I need two bars, 4 feet and a 591 thingy, but, how do these feet fit to my car ?? Is this where the fixing point things come in ?? as I have no rails on my roof, just what seems like holes, 3 on each side with poppers in them to cover them up I guess.

Go to the Thule website and work through their FitGuide.
    Simples.

  • Hi,

Have a look on the Thule website, you can punch in your car/ year etc and it will direct you to the right kit. Once you know what you need, then look on gumtree or ebay and get it cheap(er).

I've paid less than half price for my kit and it's as good as new...

It's worth paying the extra for the freeride carriers. They have adjustable wheel fixings to suit different length bikes they are also a bit more solid. I got mine on ebay for £65 each (over £120 at halfords)

When you say different length bikes, do you mean, 26er, 29er, road bikes etc ??

I have a downhill bike, an xc bike and a road bike. The wheelbases of the bikes are very different.

Its all explained nicely on the appropriate websites like Thule.com

Additionally for your specific car check your car manual, which strangely enough tells you how to fix things onto your car like roof racks.

Here is a simpler question, if I get a set of bars, of any make, will the thule 591 bike rack fit to said bars, of any make ??
  • There are generally two types of roof bars, sqaure steel and aero alloy. These will require specific feet for both, the feet are specific to cars. Do you have roof rails on the car?

Also, note, roof mounted racks may not suite your bikes. Some full sus bikes have things in the way of where the clamp goes.

My Atera Giro bars fit any size bike with a 'normal' main down tube.

Go and look at the roofbox site.

the 591's will come with two packs of fixings 1 set for the aerobar/wingbar and another which clamps around a square bar thule square bar and others that are similar dimensions (Go for the square bar if you like the sound of wolves chasing you at 60mph) your best as mentioned, going on the thule site with your car details then trawling the web for nice price yes?
