Early Uniglide hubs

My early 80's Viking Vision is in at an LBS for repair at the minute. The freewheel had been letting go intermittently, and then engaging again. Not much fun while pedalling out of the saddle!
So I thought it was just a case of getting the freewheel replaced. But the LBS have now told me it's not actually a freewheel, it's an early freehub. I presume it’s what Sheldon is describing here: http://sheldonbrown.com/k7.html#uniglide-old
He's having problems fixing this. I'm struggling to understand the actual workings of this. If the body isn't replaceable then does an entirely new freehub need to be sourced, and the wheel rebuilt onto it?
Is there another solution?
I'm not sure of the actual hub model. The rim is a Mavic 190FB.

If it is a freehub then the body almost certainly is replaceable but finding a replacement is likely to be more trouble than it's worth.
Wheels from that era can often be bought very cheaply, I'd probably just buy another one.0 -
Can't see any direct replacements at the minute. Shame, as I would have liked to keep it original.
But basically any rear wheel with 126mm spacing and a 5/6/7 speed freehub will do?0 -
Is it 7 speed now? If so you could go cassette freehub or freewheel. Freehubs are normally 7 speed and upwards. Freewheels are anything up to 8 speed.
If you look on ebay (or your nearest bike recycling place) there are often decent old wheels that take screw on freewheels. Just don't buy something horrible with a steel rim.0 -
(I was assuming you will be replacing the current cassette and possibly chain. Doing that may be cheaper than finding a wheel that will take your cassette.)0

I have a new UG 7 speed freehub body and I sell new 7 speed HG/UG bodies Easy to find when you know where to look.http://www.thecycleclinic.co.uk -wheel building and other stuff.0

MajorMantra - It's six speed. Yes, I would replace the wheel and cassette.
