I've not had much luck finding an answer on the interwebs - can anyone give me a view on what the difference between an Ultegra RD-6700-A rear derailleur is compared with the similarly named Ultegra RD-6700 GS is?

I have an inkling it might be greater tooth capacity, but I can't find it writ down anywhere!

Thanks,
Chris

  • RD-6700 is max rear sprocket = 28
    RD-6700-A is max rear sprocket = 30

Why Shimano have decided not to publish spec sheets for these newer variants I don't know, there aren't any for Sora 3500 either.

I think it's designed for triples.

They're both designed for triples but seem to be variants - the RD-6700-A being more recent. Doesn't seem to be much documentation though...

I thought the RD-6700 was ok for 30 too (that's what I run quite happily on mine), but I have a friend who runs a 12-36 (yup!) on his which we think is a RD-6700-A, but the stampings on the parallelogram are not al that clear either...

Doe the RD-6700-A have a wider range (i.e. difference) in teeth?

shimano tech docs website is all you ever need

Shimano state 28 max sproket size for the 6700 but I suspect a 30 would work.

Those docs are the Parts List for both variants but only the Technical Service Instructions for the RD-6700 (and not the RD-6700-A) as rothers_bikeo says above.

As I said, the documentation is not there (even on the Shameano site), so has anyone got any insight, and especially information about the max tooth range difference (front and rear) for the RD-6700-A?
  • Send Shimano an email to ask - they were pretty prompt at replying to my tech questions not covered in their documentation.
