Road Bike Budget £1800

This is my first post so please be kind

i got into road biking a year ago now and have totally got the bug big time, my first and current bike is a felt f95 which i have upgraded with a full 105 groupset and kinetic 1 wheels, im riding 3 times a week covering between 80 to 140 miles. im progressing each and every week and my times are getting better with a dozen or so koms to my name. i feel its time to spend some money and upgrade to a better bike

i have a budget of no more than £1800 and was wanting your advice on the best road bike for that amount, i have been looking, and im keen on the planet x n2a, as well as the scott foil 40 but any other recommendations would be greatly recieved.

thanks in advance :D

At that price and with your experience I would get one built up, then you can choose your components including wheels. If you get one 'off the shelf' then you WILL end up swapping things and end up costing you more.

TCR Composite 1 - Ultegra 11spd, good carbon frame, in budget, nice colour.

only place I can think of that do that is ribble, and im not to keen on there frames, dont want anything less than a 105 groupset and a decent set of wheels, I didn't realize that choosing a bike would be this difficult

How about the PX RT-57 on offer at £999? Nice frame, good components and finishing kit/wheels you can afford to upgrade with some of the rest of your budget. All in should get a nice, light bike for about £1500. Think they are selling off what stock they have left as the 57 sits awkwardly in their range.

^^ This and take a look at Dolan Tuono, Hercules or Ares bikes, spec them as you choose.
  • You have effectively written a thread for me here! I am in the same situation with very similar budget... On my list at the moment is:

Cube Agree GTC SL - £1400ish
Cube Agree GTC SLT - £1700ish
Felt F4 - £1500-1800 depending if you go for the Team edition or not from wiggle
    Focus Cayo 4.0 - £1800ish
    Trek Madone 4.9 - £1900 (if I fit a 56 but think I'm probably a 58 in which case there a bit more)

The only reason I'm looking now is of the decent price you can get on 2013 bikes. I started looking nearer the £1k mark but that soon drifted towards £1500. Now I'm thinking that I should forget about getting a sale bargain and just order a 2014 Canyon CF SL 9.0 for £1850 and wait or (maybe an SLX and pay a bit more... just don't tell the wife!)

Canyons have a great following on here, but are they really better than the ones mentioned above and in this thread?

This is where my money would go.

The only downsides are press-fit bottom bracket (but most new designs seem to sport this abomination) and Power Torque chainset (only an issue when you want to service it or investigate the BB creak  )

  • Guys i cannot thankyou enough for your recommendations, but to be honest you've battered my head in even more, im leaning towards the cube gtc sl 2014 mainly because the spec is good and its available at my lbs,but that will probably change tomorrow, i still like the planet x n2a just wish i could find more reviews about it.

i'm going to try a few out this weekend which will hopefully steer me in the right direction :|

Very "Giant" in its styling and therefore a bit off the mark. looks like a £500 entry level bike to me. Meh... Good bikes but boring, much like the Giant I have.

Phone Westbrook cycles and ask them to do you a deal on a Scott Foil 20 or the CR1 Pro.

  • well guys ive been and took the plunge, and got myself a BH prisma 7.5 with sram force groupset, its a beauty, I went out today and put the first 30 miles on it, runs smooth and is unbelievably light, the bike was up for £2300 and with my amazing haggling skills got it down to £1850, its on amazon for £1750, but theres no way im buying a bike off amazon.

    im really pleased with it.

once again thanks for your help even though I went with something completely different :-)

Put some pics and specs in the Your Bikes section.
  • Needs better pics, you sure you bought the right size with that much seat post showing and with that many spacers?

I'm also in a similar situation with similar budget.

Was looking at the Canyon CF SL 9:
    http://www.canyon.com/_en/roadbikes/bike.html?b=3241

According to their sizing i'd be a small - am i correct in thinking that if i want that in that size and in black i'm currently looking at next May for delivery'? That's pretty mental in terms of a lead time on buying a new bike! :o
  • I was looking at the exact same one... and keep popping on there every couple of days in the hope they've realised there mistake re. the delivery times. I even sent them an email to check, but they kept to the same story, I'd be prepared to wait until February because I probably wouldn't use it much until early spring anyway.... but there's no way I'm waiting until May! It makes even less sense considering you can get the double or triple front set on the same bike in January.

They have the Silver one earlier, but I haven't yet convinced myself its as nice as the black. It's also a shame they don't do the SL in 'stealth' .. easily the best colour combination in my opinion.

I'm probably over thinking the whole thing - I should just go and buy one! All the bikes in this price range won't the limiting factor in progressing up the hill... my fat belly has a far bigger effect than which bike has the latest Ultegra or the smoothest wheels!

    I bought this absolute BARGAIN!!!!

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/raleigh-sp-race-ultegra-2013/

Utterly delighted with it and top service from wiggle,(didn't even have to oil the chain when I got it!)

plus you're saving a lot of money than can be saved up for ffwd etc deep rims, (I'm saving up for them,) you could spend it on other accessories, (cant think of any, maybe botttle cages, pedals etc) or you could save it ( puft ;) )

Would highly recommend it anyway :D

i was fitted for the bike and its a large frame believe it or not but with it been a compact frame it gives the illusion that its smaller with a smaller seat tube and sloping head tube making the bike lighter and stiffer, i must admit the seat pin is long in the photos but i have since dropped it, theres only 20cm of seat pin showing now, if i was to go for the xl frame the whole dynamic and geometry of the bike was wrong for me making it twitchy, the bike is the most comfortable bike ive ever ridden
