I will be heading down after work to see what's left....unless I can't get my girlfriend to shop for me (which isn't likely)

I doubt there'll be much left by then, pick me up some mini kabanos if they've got any left though

  • Got in our local branch at bang on 8am this morning - what a bleedin' scrum, elbows everywhere, like Cav in a bunch sprint!

AND they didn't have any merino base layers or waterproof jackets (not that I wanted either, but just saying).
  • dumb question, but what exactly is the difference between the merino base layer, and the merino cycling shirt??

The base layer will be for wearing directly next to the skin under something else such as the shirt which is more of a top layer :)

  • Not really sure Pess, I got a merino cycling shirt for me other half (they don't do my size in the mens version, small [grrr...another gripe], but they do in womens). It just looks like a regular top, no back pockets or owt, just a small zip up the front AND it's only about 40% merino.

The base layer will be a tighter fitting long sleeve top to be worn directly next to the skin (but as I say, they didn't have any at my local, so I couldn't say for sure, or what the merino content was).

the baselayers are 100% merino i think.

  • i picked up one of the merino baselayers this morning. used it on a ride earlier and was pleasantly surprised by the additional comfort when worn under a jersey. it dried out incredibly quickly after i'd finished riding and was sat having a quick coffee before a shower. my jersey (pearl izumi) stays pretty damp and uncomfortable for the duration of my post ride coffee.
never had one before. wish i'd bought a couple more. (sleeves a little on the short side though)
  • i might take the merino cycling top back then and change it for the base layer

Ggggrrrrr....that makes it even more frustrating they don't do my size!

(might get a womens small instead, nobody will notice if it's underneath!)

yeah same here with the Merino layer, I bought a medium but tbh i could do with a smaller one. The arms are seriously flappy lol
  • Tried to get the Merino base layer from Aldi at lunchtime and there wasn't a one. They seemed to have everything else as well, bar the HR monitors
  • You wanna gerron t'internet.
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • I put the merino baselayers back, they may be cheap(ish) but they sure are shapeless. Winter gloves seem a bargain so got a couple of pairs of them, but the skull cap never covered my ears so didn't bother. Couple of cans of GT85 too.

Just got back from Aldi with the following:-

The Men's cycling shirt (jersey) - Medium
Base layer top - Medium (not the Merino one)
    Winter Leggings - Medium
    Puncture repair kit
    Bread
and some white choc chip cookies

    all for under 40 notes.

All the clothing is a perfect fit, the base layer hugs all parts of the body (no bagginess at all), the jersey is great -silicone grip around the bottom and the sleeves are fine, not to long or short.
    Leggings are sound.

The rest I haven't tried yet - looking forward to the cookies with some Breaking Bad tonight though.

Been a fan of the Aldi base layers for a while now. Already got 2 from previous offers but went in for two more today. Even happier with these as they are plain white and black so don't stand out particularly as Aldi gear.

Also got extra pair of cycling socks as they're extremely comfortable and they haven't had today's designs in for a year or so.

Sorry dude, I got so carried away scrambling my way though all the boxes looking for a black medium base layer I'd forgotten what I went in for.
  • I bought some leggings, they are a really naff fit! Felt like I had them on backwards and there was no drawstring :(

Rest of the stuff is brilliant. Gloves, socks and arm warmers also purchased and no complaints about them.

I know this isnt much good to you now but i think GT85 is currently cheaper on Wiggle with free delivery too!

I just knew there would be a thread re this, there was last year too. can recommend the bright yellow long sleeve top, my last one lasted a full winter of all weather 38 mile a days, 5 days a week commute and is still going strong, really road stained but not falling apart, I wear it over the top of everything, saves my mavic equipe winter top getting crappy? got another this week for 10 quid, it does make me look life a fluorescent freak but that's kind of the look I need with the traffic in the mornings. Stay safe .
  • Mine too, although I'm not a fan of the zipped pockets. I got two last winter and I didn't buy any more this winter despite wearing them (it felt like) up until about June. I've fallen off a few times wearing them, and they got blood on them after I was hit by a car, and they've been through the washing machine innumerable times, but they still look good.

I got the women's small, fit is great. I will be wearing it as the penultimate layer in deep winter.

might be alright to get you home but wouldnt want to rely on it for a permanent fix, having said that i may have just got a bad set.

i'm not knocking aldi stuff, i think their clothing is really good value and if there is anything left this weekend will be picking some up myself!
