I'm going to change my car and would like to get my bike in the back on a rack with the forks attached. I've looked at a Skoda Roomster as they do there own bike rack. I wonder if anyone has this set up or any other car rack combination to comment on.

Thule do an in car rack mounting from the front forks for most 4x4 vehicles now.
I ride a bike. Doesn't make me green or a tree hugger. I drive a car too.
  • I have a Skoda with a tow bar. You can get a very nice 2 bike rack from Thule that fits on the towbar for £60.

Really ? Please tell me where. Is it the hanging type ? Would probably prefer the ones that come with the lights and number plate mount. Haven't found one of those online for less than £100.

    Thanks in advance.
  • It is the Thule Xpress 970

Good you tube video if you search for it.

Just for info, seeing the links above, I used Roofbox earlier this summer when I bought some new roof bars. Good service, helpful when I rang them in advance with some questions and pretty quick turnaround on the order.

If you are really interested in keeping the bike inside the car, the old shape (pre'11) Mercedes B-class used to have an internal mounting rack available. Think the A-class might have as well. The new B-class has a lower roofline and there's no way mine would go in with the saddle attached. Not sure how much higher the old shape was (probably <6") so I'm not convinced it would be any better than just dropping the wheels out and sticking it in the boot of something big enough. Go look at an Octavia instead.

for bikes in back of a Honda Jazz

I have a Honda Jazz. With the back seats in the 'magic seat' position I can get 1 bike in the back with wheels out and two sets of wheels and another bike between the seats .with wheels out and 2 sets of wheels plus room for bags etc And the front passenger seat in the full back position.

I have an octavia. I get 2 bikes, a tent, 2 cool boxes, 2 camping recliner chairs, a table, a weeks worth of clothes, food and drink, biking kit.

By far the biggest boot of any family hatchback.

I have an Octavia. Its bloody ace. Apart from the bike stuff, I get a big dog, 2 kids in kids seats, the wife, all our stuff for a week and a double buggy in it without having to resort to a roof box.

Was funny at a recent sportive as other riders were taking half dismantled bikes out of cars and building them up, or taking them off carriers, we just opened the boot and pulled ours out in one piece
  • My bike slots straight into our Honda CRV.

My mate has a Porsche Cayenne GTS, and his doesn't! Ha bloody ha!

I have a Yeti with the Skoda bike carrier you are looking at. Its a nice bit of kit on the whole though the clips and straps that are designed to hold the seatpost only fit the smallest of diameter posts, not a great issue as I just use a bungee strap. With the Yeti you need to remove a seat to fit the bike in but that's half a minute of a job also suspect to fit 2 road bikes in would be a bit tight. Not sure of how the layout works in a Roomster.

Not sure if it's too big for your needs or not but an S-Max can get many bikes inside with the Ford/Thule internal bikerack. I have two bar things, but I reckon I could easily get 4 bikes inside if needed. Galaxy is the same with more head room, but looks like a bus IMO.

    Are you both 5ft2 :)

Any car that fits my Specialized Carve 23" in without taking the front wheel off would need a huge boot ;)
  • Mine fits in me little Clio with wheels on

  • I have a Clio Campas now thats why I want a bigger car. I be interested to know how you'd get a bike in as it would save me a lot of money
  • Passenger seat moved as far forward as it will go, rear seats down front wheel sits nicely between front and rear seats the rest lies nicely in the back

And as an added bonus no room for kids dogs or wives lol

    No 5 ft 11 and 16 stone!

It has a huge boot. I have a mark 3 octavia which has just under 2 metres of load bay length. My previous octavia had a slightly smaller boot but still swallowed the 21 inch rockhopper I had at the time.

That pic doesn't do the length of the load bay justice

OP - I'm confused. You seem to require the bike to go inside the car but you link to external tow bar mounted type carriers with lightboards???

If you require the bike to go in the car whay not just lay it down?

If you need the inside space why not just go external (as per your own linked suggestions)??
    Yellow is the new Black.
  • I'm able to get 2 bikes with wheels still on in the back of my Berlingo (2009, new shape which is a bit bigger than the older ones) and still have space for 4 people and plenty of other stuff.
3 bikes with wheel and still space for 3 + luggage.
If I took wheels off, I'd have no issues getting 4 bikes in and space for 4 people.
I don't have an internal rack holding the forks - I just use any spare seatbelts to hold them secure.
You can't get more space for your money - small hatchback money for a real load lugger. Best with individual folding seats in the back rather than the 2/3 split. Best bit is I can remove the middle seat and stick the bike(s) between the children & stop bickering. :-D

I was believing everything you were saying until you mentioned 'children & stop bickering' I would need 2 cars for this to stop!
