identifying correct derailleur hanger

Could someone shed some light on how to identify the correct hanger for a particular bike
I have been given a dawes xc 1.4 and the hanger was snapped off tried a spare hanger i had lying around which didnt fit.
Any help would be appreciated.

talk to a shop that sell Dawes or google hanger (dérailleurs) and see what is listed for your make model and year."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

Or take a photograph of the frame where the hanger is attached and then have good look at the ones on the BETD site to find one that matches.
