All, looking for a bit of a favour if anyone can be so kind to help....

I'm looking at ordering a Planet X Pro Carbon ASAP but i'm right on the measurment split between frame sizes (Small and Medium) and not sure what will fit properly

Considering making the 520mile round trip to Sheffield to get fitted but thought i would chance my luck on here that some kind local has a PX Pro Carbon in either Small or Medium that they wouldn't mind me have a wee seat on to check sizing

Thanks in advance
Calum

Are there any bikes in your LBS that have a similar geometry/sizing, that you could try? Just a thought, in case you get no joy with a PX.
“Training is like fighting with a gorilla. You don’t stop when you’re tired. You stop when the gorilla is tired.”
  • Have you tried ringing them? They advised me on sizing on a per model basis, quick easy and straight from the horses mouth
  • thanks for the reply mate but unfortunately with PX's compact frame size it seems to be quite unique in the sizing as far as i know, tried to compare with other compacts like the Giant TCR etc... but it's a bit different

yeh i have Jay first thing i did, problem is i've spoken to 2 different people there and one suggested Small and the other a Medium, only real answer is going to sit on one

    I'm 5ft7 - 5ft8 but i've got short legs for a short person (28.5" inside leg)
  • Check out http://www.planet-x-bikes.co.uk/help/what-size-bike

Paul Curran has similar height / leg length to you and goes for the small frame

Worst case, would the small be the safest option if you can't try them, at least you could put a longer stem on and a seat post with a lay back?

  • cheers Jay i did see that but my only worry with going for the small frame is that it might be quite a racey setup (small frame size meaning higher seat position and more of a drop to the bars)

i'm looking at doing a few sportives so looking for a fairly relaxed geo (well not too racey anyway)

thanks Arran and yeh it probably would be but as above thats my only worry with the small

pretty new to road cycling so any thoughts or advice is much appreciated

You'll probably get used to the 'racey' position pretty quick and small bikes look best anyway, everyone knows that

    This.

And it’s easier to size a small bike up than a big bike down.

FWIW I’m 170cm with a 29” inside leg and if I was going to buy one of those it would be an S.

Friend of mine is same height as you and rides a Medium but he is a bit longer in the leg 31'', I ride a Small and I am not as tall as you but have a 30'' inseam.
It is worth the trip to sit on one as it's a lot of money to get it wrong, just ring them to make sure they have them in the sizes you need to try.
  • cheers gents definitely putting me a bit more at ease that the Small might be right for me

would still be great if someone local had one so i could have a try as i'm not really up for the 520mile round trip

diamonddog - you meaning you ride a PX pro carbon or just a small in another bike ?

Sorry for the confusion, yes I ride a PX Pro Carbon, top bike and very good vfm. It is very responsive and mine is somewhat lighter than when it was bought, weighs 7.32kg/16.1lb with only minimal upgrades. I have the Sram Rival set up which I am more than happy with. :)
  • glad to hear it mate, always nice to hear positives before i spend £1k haha,

if you don't mind me asking what height are you and what length/rise stem do you use ? how do you find the setup, quite racey or fairly comfy for longer rides ?

I am only 165mm/51kg and use an 80 stem with a 20mm spacer, I think it comes with 40mm spacers as standard but I lowered the stem. It is a racy set up but I have had no problems as such on the longer rides.
As you say you are on the cusp for the sizing but bear in mind they are a compact frame, seat tube length on a Small is 44cm so quite a piece of seatpost showing and effective top tube length is 53cm.

Wow, 165mm, that is tiny. How do you reach the pedals?

A bit taller than Quintana (but not as good) :D
Edit: Sorry 165cm about the same size as Quintana but lighter build and still not as good as him. :D

Sorry DD, a bit childish but I couldn't resist. You must be a climbing machine at that weight (much like Quintana)

Cycling is one of the few sports where being small/light is a distinct advantage. I am not that tall (176.5cm) but too heavy (75kg) to be a force going up hill.

No prob I can see the funny side of it, if you had not spotted it someone else would have. :)
  • 520 miles = about £100 in fuel and wear and tear on your car.

I'd say the small sounds right for you. I'd risk it for a biscuit. If you really had to change it, you could sell the frame and get the medium and it would surely not set you back more than that?
  • cheers for all the help and comments gents

placed my order with PX last week but unfortunately they decided to mess me about (delivery/build times and also spec upgrades among other things) and i've not been happy with their customer service at all so the orders been cancelled!

Now looking at getting a Giant (Defy/TCR) or Cube (Peloton/Agree), just trying to find the best deal out there and then get it ordered asap, luckily i know the small frame in the TCR/Defy fit me so no messing about with guessing for that
  • well i placed an order for a 2013 Giant TCR composite 2 yesterday and should get it this week....

much happier than messing about with Planet X
