I have got a powertap ANT+ wheel. I want to use it to log training and send to online coach. I previously used a garmin 800 for this. I liked the mapping option to get me home after a long ride (i get lost alot).

Having sold the 800 and since got a Android phone (gt i9305) i was wondering if anyone had experience of trying to hook up an android phone to their powertap/other ANT device?

Which apps do you like?

How did you securely attach phone to bars and keep weather proofed?

Or did you just keep it in your pocket?
Did you manage to upload to trainingpeaks/WKO/strava?

Thanks everyone!

Look it up, I think most Sony Experia phones have ANT+ support, but don't think the Galaxy S3 does (that's the phone you have right?) so you;re out of luck.

I've only got an ANT+ heart rate monitor and my phone (Xperia Ray) needed a driver update to get ANT+ running but since then it's been a doddle to use. You can get a demo app for testing which just reads and displays everything the phone is picking up and paired to.
Like chanjy says, not all phones support ANT+. If yours doesn't, you can buy Bluetooth/USB dongles which will make it work with your phone.

I keep my phone in my back pocket. I don't go out if it's really wet but it gets sweaty and the phone's been fine. Try and keep sharp metal things (e.g. keys) away from the phone or it'll get scuffed, or at least the screen protector will.

I've looked into getting a handlebar mount, but most of them look too big and chunky.
  • thanks both of you for replies. yes looks like I'll have to get a dongle for ant connectivity. Anyone manage to upload data from powertap to wko via phone?

    Which apps are you using?

  • You can get a USB OTG Cable and an ANT USB Stick to plug in to your phone. Then I think you install the ANT Radio Service, ANT USB Service, and ANT+ Plugins and you should be good to go.
Alot of people use IpBike, the UI is pretty busy but it works pretty well.

On a side note it looks like the latest Samsung devices are coming out with ANT+, so the choice of phones is getting better :P

If you're training with power I have to ask, why did you sell the garmin?

I don't think an ANT+ dongle in you phone will be very practical for use outdoors. On the turbo maybe, but not outside.

For ipbike to work you need a ANT2 dongle - the early Garmin ones are only ANT1 and they don't work (I know because I tried, but never for a moment thought about using it outdoors).
    More problems but still living....
  • Been using an OTG cable and ANT2 USB dongle for a week now and it works well. Picks up my garmin cadance speed and hr sensors as well as powertap. Still finding my way round the ipbike app but it looks good.

I like the look of this mount

...it has a battery pack included. Not sure if it will have room for the dongle to exit the case tho.. anyone used one?
