...there should be a WHEELS section so that anyone can go in there and find stuff out.

Save us from the constant barrage of 'what wheels should I get?' posts that seem to occur as regularly as the tide.

  • We are trying to limit the number of sections, rather than increasing them. Yes, there are loads of threads about wheels, but there are loads of threads about which cassette to fit or how to do this and that with Strava... truth is there are proabably 20 topics which are constantly rotating...
Anyway, you can post your request in the Bike Radar Office section... it is up to the admin. to sort these things

  • It would be better if everytime you clicked "New Topic" an ample breasted woman with "Use The Search" tattoed across her midriff popped up.
  • Mavics or 23mm handbuilts
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • But seriously, what are the best wheels I can buy for my bike?
  • How mutch do you weigh?

All this would achieve would be a massive increase in the number of new topics, well from me at least

Well, I'm fairly big, so was thinking of something strong, something like this maybe?

  • Imagine blowing that up with a mini pump.

A very good thing for a Best Wheels thread.
  • We could even have a special "Are RS80s any good?" sub-forum in the new wheels section.
  • Well,

there is a FAQ section that can be used... I did write an article on cassettes and compatiblity, hopefully someone read it before posting the usual Shimano 10 speed cassette + speacer question.

Similar articles can be posted, ie. criteria to choose wheels for a heavy rider, just contact the admin team if you fancy writing one

The 'use the bloody search' thing....

One of the main problems is that MOST people (and certainly most people who get moaned at / told to use the search) are used to the ease of whacking stuff into Google, and Google is very good at finding results with no real mucking around.

PhpBB's search really should default to be good at finding THREADS that contain what the person is searching for.

See the image below... if Bikeradar changed the default search so that the two options highlighted below in Red were highlighted, most people would get the kind of search results they expect to get.

Hey presto, the search would work like an average human being would expect it to.

(If you are someone reading this and has had trouble using the search function, try what I have screenshot below and tell me it isn't 1000 times closer to what you'd naturally expect the search to do... type in RS80 for example into the 'Search for Keywords' Box at the top of the Search screen and compare what you get back compared to when you don't select these options I've highlighted.)

.... ALSO If there is an option for it, put a search bar on the top of every page that searches with these options selected, I'm sure there is an option in phpBB for this, but there is NO POINT in having it there unless it works with these options. (If it is not a feature within phpBB that is simply turned on, it would be easy to code and put in the header using hidden fields for the desired pre-selected options).

XDA Forums automatically search when you try to create a new thread. Before your thread is published you are asked to view the results to check your question hasn't already been asked.

Surely the BR forum can be as clever as a bunch of computer nerds?

LFGSS forums does it too. Problem is a lot of people don't actually write the topic of the thread in the thread title.

So instead of "what carbon tubular wheels should I get for sportives?" they might type in "question for you guys". Which wouldn't bring up any useful results...

  • Ok, point taken but I think "regulars" on here seem to forget the point of the forum.

Let's be honest, I am pretty sure that almost every conceivable question regarding bike equipment has been asked and answered. On this basis, why not shut the forum down and just have a big notice saying "we can't be bothered, just use the search button".

Yes, it can be frustrating for people to ask the same questions, especially when it has been only asked 3 threads previously, but I have seen forums die because "regulars" decided they were too important to answer these kinds of questions and the forum atmosphere became such that no one new dared ask or say anything.

If someone has spent the time to read the post, click reply and then write:

"Hey, dude, how about using the search function. Newbies."

They may as well have written something more constructive.

    My two penneth.

    Agree

I also agree but it is also worth suggesting additional information could be found via the search function.
