Hi, I was looking to get a new set of wheels...I currently have a cannondale supersix ultegra with mavic ksyrium equipe wheels, but I would like to get a set that is a little bit more aero. I am very small, 5'6" and 118 lbs. I will be doing mostly crit races and time trials, but also some fast paced group rides.
I heard cosmic carbone sl's are pretty fast and can take some abuse. Also considering a pair of used zipp 404s. Would be fine with clinchers or tubulars. Any suggestions on other wheels at that price? Thx

chinese wheels will be worse then your Mavics !

The Cosmics are (Im told fast) but are heavy. Depending on budget look at HED or American Classic. Zipp are very good (I have two sets) but for the money a good set of handbuilds will be better value....check out wheelsmiths
  • Reynolds (new) Assaults are right on the money.

They outperform hed's and zipps any time. good for lighter folks as they're fast but forgiving.
  • Lightly used options:
303 tubulars are probably the best all round for you, but... it's a lot of money for something which is not very durable, so see how you feel about that... don't be fooled by the fact that they survive 50 Km of french cobbles... not all do and those which do are then ditched after the race.
For something a tad more robust and clincher, the new Cosmic C40 are nice, but again, not cheap and probably not as fast

Finally you can consider hand built options, bearing in mind there isn't a rim as good as the above ones to build. On the other hand you get something that can be repaired and rebuilt and you will probably spend a lot less too and can afford new.

  • There are a variety of Gigantex carbon rims in clincher or tubular for the handbuilt option. Perhaps gigantex 50mm rims on DT Swiss hubs?

Fulcrum red wind wheels may come in under budget these would be fairly aero and there is always the campagnolo options.

Miche supertype come to my mind though. They come as tubulars but are light have durable hubs. If I was buying race wheels these would be them.

Fulcrum Reds ride very well but are pretty hefty !
