Should I get a street bike or a mountain bike?

I'm thinking about buying a bike at walmart to ride to work (I only live a mile away) and to do cardio on when I'm not running. Should I get a mountain bike or a street bike? Why is one better than the other?

Walmart mountain bikes are overweight turds. At that sort of price a bike with no suspension will be lighter and much nicer to ride.

Depends whether you want to ride on or off road, but as Rockmonkey said it will probably be rubbish from Walmart.
