Veloce bearings into record cups?

Folks, I have an Campag Veloce UT crankset which I'm putting on my winter bike. Said frame already has Record UT cups in it, will the cranks fit? I've read that they will but I can't seem to get them in?

Comments

  • Yes it will... Campagnolo only sell record cups for the all UT range...
As a matter of fact, I wouldn't know how to make them cheaper

Have you removed the retaining clip from the R side cup?

Don't do what I did and forget to remove the bolt from the end of one of the axles before putting it in. That doesn't help the fit!

Yeah, I thought they were all universal etc. All clips etc have been removed & it's just the bare cups in the frame. It's been like that for a while as I did a frame transfer a while back so they're completely stripped clean.

Push, it will go in... the bearings are a tight fit to the cup, otherwise you'd have play

  • I'll take the rubber mallet to it.

There are only two types of U/T cups (not including BSA or Italian threads), Record and Super Record.

The only difference is that Super Record does not have an inboard seal. However if you ever wanted to use SR cups, for the finish, then the seals can be put in and they easily pop out of Record cups.

Cannot see what the difference is with the new EPS cups apart from a bit of extra print and, from some retailers, a price premium. I have then on one bike and they are exactly the same as my non-EPS cups,

You do have to get the bearings properly square to the cups to get them in and even then takes a bit of force, although I have never had to use a mallet.

Do make sure though that they are U/T cups and not Power Torque as these ARE supposed to be different (although I dont know exactly how. Perhaps Monty Dog or cycleclinic will be along soon to tell us)

  • They're definitely UT and not PT! After some persuasion, they went in. Never had this problem with the Record c/set that came off it!

Well, if the cups are the same, then the only reason one would be easier to fit than the other is that the bearing diameters differed. And as your new bearings fit very nicely then you can happily conclude that your old ones were loose! Or that you were just a bit cack handed this time!

Aren't the differences between record and super record cups due to the SR using ceramic.bearings, so requires a different housing? Also a difference in lubrication requirement

This is what was stated in instructions for my fulcrum rrs crank instal, using ceramic bearings -although the bike shop didn't think it would make a difference using the old veloce ones, TBH

So the upshot is that yes, OP can use existing cups, I believe

The only difference between SR and Record is the lack of bearing seal - the physical dimensions are the same.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
