Planning to take a 10 speed block and remove the largest sprocket looks like it will fit fine on a 7 speed cassette hub,I would then like to run a 9 speed shifter and reduce the cable pull which i've seen before, may of been on sheldon brown's website, anyone tried this, some rear mechs work better than others, changing the position where the cable clamps is one option. Thanks

Just lose a small cog and use a 10spd shifter no shift mates needed

10spd cassettes (even with one sprocket missing) need a 10spd shifter.

If you really want to run a 9spd shifter then you'll need the shiftmate - never tried one though so can't say if it'll be okay in practice.

Is the option of running a 9spd cassette with one sprocket removed not possible? 9 and 10spd cassettes are pretty similar width-wise.
