Hi,

Made some purchases, but now think I might have problems.

Shifters : Sram x7 (3 x 9)
Rear Derailleur: Sram x7
Cassette: Sram PG990

And now for the parts that I worry about..

Front derailleur: Sram x7
Chainset: Shimano Deore m590 (9 speed)

Will the combination of x7 front derailleur work with the Shimano chainset?

Thanks,
Jon.

At the front you can run any combination of mech, cranks, shifters and chainrings (as long as they fit on crank) Its only at the back where shifters and mechs have to match as SRAM, Campagnolo and Shimano run different cable pull ratios. Chains and cassettes are universal as long as you have the right speed chain for you gears.

  • That was my understanding, but on reading the description for the crankset that I'd bought it said suitable for Shimano front mech, which is why I was concerned.

I guess it was just Shimano pushing their own products.

Compatible mechs depend on the size of the rings, so it was probably recommending a specific size mech.

    So I don't post a duplicate topic.

I've been doing some cleaning of my bike and noticed the chain shimano hg93 9 speed was stretched.

I've popped out to Halfords only place open around here today and bought a SRAM pc971 9 speed chain as a replacement as they was doing 10% off etc.

Will this be ok on my slx 9 speed cassette ?

The cassette has plenty of life left on it, was only fitted in July on a new rear wheel.

I've always used all shimano kit so unsure of the compatibility between the two.

Good to here, i just wondered if the guy in halfords was telling me it would so i would buy from them.

the only issue now is worn chain rings on the front, was slipping on a ride to work yesterday.
