I already bought this Superstar axel
http://superstar.tibolts.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=405
But it says it's for "standard dropouts" - I am using it on a bolt-through frame.
Is this asking for certain death?
Also - when installed there is not enough thread for the nut to be tightened up more than about 2 turns but as it's threaded into the frame what's the worst that can happen...?

are you using it on a bolt through frame or a Maxel frame?
bolt through - holes no thread.
Maxel type - has thread on one side."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."

No, I'm using it on a 135mm frame just where the chainstay & seatstay join is thicker than a dropout would be.
This is the unit that the manufacturer recommends;

Same size, same weight, no nut (sort of)"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

Sorry, not bolt-through. Maxel type frame. Threaded on one side.

From Superstar;
"...our axle is not designed to work with maxle type frames. It may work in some cases but we have not tested it fully. It is designed to be used with plain dropouts with a nut on the end"
Not sure if this means - it might not thread into some maxle type frames or it might brake during use, potentially resulting in serious injury or death"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

yours is not a maxel frame.
just a threaded through frame."Do not follow where the path may lead, Go instead where there is no path, and Leave a Trail."
