I was wondering how you snap a cassette - I have pinged teeth off sprockets before, but that was a Miche cassette. Campag stuff I'm generally pretty happy with, although I'm not a fan of Ultra Torque. The bearings just seem far too exposed and seem to wear out really quickly. And the single pivot rear brakes I find really tricky to adjust.

Shimano stuff on the mountain bike is pretty poor, the original stuff 20 odd years ago was great but since that needed replacing maybe 6 years ago, its needed pretty frequent servicing.

Just had a thought about this: if a bit of grit got in between the sprocket and spacers before the locknut was tightened up (they're relatively high torque IIRC), then it would mean that the sprocket wasn't properly clamped, allowing a tiny amount of flex, which might then lead to the failure you had.

    Maybe.

Don't know if that's of any help.

Unlikely. Cassette gets throughly cleaned whenever it comes off and I always check it's on tight enough - learned that the hard way a few years ago! I think I've just had a run of bad luck. The Record 11 cassettes are pretty thin... It's back to Chorus chains/cassettes for me now.
  • The only campag I have is cufflinks.
What do you mean you think 64cm is a big frame?
  • My touring bike has Campag Veloce 10 spd Ergos (Ultrashift), which are shifting an entirely Shimano 8 speed triple drive train very effectively.

I have to admit (grudgingly) that Campag are trying my patience at the moment. In the last few months I've had a Record cassette snap and now the rear hub on my new Shamal's has developed a weird problem and needs to be warrantied. Developed play on the Raid, got home to discover cracked bearings. These were replaced only to crack again 3 miles into my first ride, leaving me with a 2 mile walk to the nearest shop (who had no bearings in stock) and then a taxi ride home.

Thankfully my LBS have been on the case with the Campag UK guy and are sorting the warranty process for me. However I really did not expect a Campag Hub to fail so spectacularly after less than 1000 miles.

Still, when it works it is lovely and still far better than that fugly Shimano nonsense. My 08 Chorus gruppo still runs like a dream.

Stay away from the record and super record stuff, not sure what the pros get but my limited experiences of super record parts has been much like yours.

One cracked bearing is odd. Two means the hub is shot, and yes that is unusual for Campag. Unlucky. Must have warped the hub shell somehow, too much power as you say.. :)

I've done 1000s of miles on Chorus, Record and Super Record gruppos and had zero failures or problems with any of them. Not even a need to adjust anything other than for brake pad wear. Functionally they all work pretty much the same I find in shifting terms anyway.

I had a Dura Ace 7800 setup on another bike which was also excellent shifting and reliable, but noisy. Could never get it to run anywhere near as quiet as the Campag drivetrains.

Weird but at least that helps comfort my coffee shop fettling ego for failing to sort it!

I can't find my crystal ball right now, but I'm to go out on a limb and say the other model won't last long.

a lot cheaper than super record but i cant find anyone sell 10 speed version, so i guess that idea is dead in the water.

I think Miche hubs / wheels are quite good, and maybe their FGSS stuff, but I wouldn't touch their cassettes / chainrings / chains with a bargepole.
