Fixing a stripped bottle cage boss on alu bike

Now the weather has most certainly turned for the worse its time to dust off my winter bike. Its an aluminium cannondale saeco caad and the top boss on the seat tube is stripped. Bike is silent when I haven't got a bottle in the cage, but if I insert a 800ml bottle and ride over rough ground then its pretty noisy. The noise is definitely coming from the fact the cage isn't held tight at the seat tube top boss, is there an easy way to resolve things so the bottle cage is held firmly in place and doesn't make a racket over uneven roads ?

Do you mean the threads on the rivnut are stripped? If so if you have the right tool (decent lbs) will have one its an easy cheap job to fit a new one.0

Any idea where to actually get the rivnuts from? My lbs has run out, and doesn't know where to get more from. That supplier has stopped doing them apparently.0

We use them at work supplied by a company called toolcom, would think that plenty of hardware companies are to supply them though, they're not a cycling specific item, just a 5mm nutsert0

Machine Mart/Sealey Draper/any tool factor/ebay/t'internet. Everybody does them, 10 a penny (literally - its the tool that costs about £20).0

Re-tap the thread with a 'tap' 1 increment larger than the existing hole. Its soft and should be easy to tap.

Wonder if you could use a 'Helicoil' kit. I have used them for Spark Plug holes but never on something that small.
A bolt size slightly bigger might just self-tap, done gently.seanoconn - gruagach craic!0 -

You can't use a helicoil on a tube. They cannot be supported that way.
If it were my bike I would firstly try to pull the rivnut a little tighter to the tube with the tool, but failing that I would be looking at drilling it out...very, very carefully!- - - - - - - - - -

I have a proper nutsert tool (and nutserts) if you are near Walton on Thames.
The name rivnut is an american abomination and should not be used where english is spoken. :roll:0 -
Before and after, please note the image shows stainless steel nutserts. For an ally frame best to use softer aluminium nutserts.
