Front Mech - is 42T rating ok with a 48T chainring?

I'm building a hack bike on a shoestring budget.
There are plenty of 42T rated front-mechs for sale for next-to-nothing.
My big chainring is 48T so a 42T derailleur will sit a bit higher than optimum. Will this cause any problems?

  • Are you looking at road mechs?
  • Whatever will work. I've removed the granny-ring from a triple so now it's 48/38. I thought I'd use the H/L screws to stop any up or down overshift.

Yes, shifting won't be good, you'll have to sit it far to high as the tail will catch much lower down than the top section due to th tighter curvature.
