Can anyone recommend a proper tight, race fit jacket to be used in chilly weather, that is at the same time waterproof and breathable? Does anything like it exist? :-)

Cheers

  • Castelli Gabba is the top pick for pros. Pricey though.
  • I don't mind the price (obviously the cheaper the better) as long as it's really excellent quality and ticks all boxes. :-)

    Thanks.
  • I just bought the short sleeved Gabba + the armwarmers, first ride yesterday in admittedly not really cold weather
But great kit & very breathable. Not sure how it would go in the real cold though. I have a Castelli Managgia jacket for the really cold stuff. IMO worth getting the decent stuff if you're going to ride in the cold. Or stay in.
  • The Castelli Gabba is probably the best option though it is incredibly expensive. Personally my next choice would be The Endure Equipe Thermo windshield, not as waterproof as the gabba but also about £100 cheaper

Autumn isn't winter and winter isn't autumn.
I have a gabba, but in proper winter I think you'll need a good base layer and a gilet on top. At least.

I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • I would think you shold look at the Rapha pro-team jacket, well fitting, showerproof, warm, etc

I have a Gabba convertible - it's a great spring/autumn garment for high intensity riding in moist/wet conditions - however you need to be pumping out the heat to stay warm as it lacks any real thermal properties. It's about 3rd on my scale of winter-jackets in terms of warmth.

Nobody makes a fully water resistant thermal winter jacket - you'd simply boil in the bag.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
  • Castelli Mortirolo Due is a tight fit jacket thats really comfortable, warm and wind proof. Great jacket. Expensive but worth it.

i recently bought the castelli due trasperante windproof jacket which i think is made of the same gabba material on the front, shoulders and back pocket - i got it for £67 on wiggle
    i need more bikes
  • Thanks everyone. The Gabba looks like the best option but the price is a bit steep. The Cervo also looks alright and it's a lot cheaper with a discount.

It looks like it's twice as much on Wiggle now :(

SloppySchleckonds Actually, I need more Autumn jersey/jacket rather than Winter one. I've got really warm base layers and last winter I only used to put a long sleeve jersey over the top and gilet if it was really cold and I've ridden in every weather. I also think I can cope a little bit better in the cold than others. I usually have the least amount of layers on me :-) However, my jerseys and my racey ''rain'' jacket don't keep me dry when it's wet, so I want to get something I'm gonna feel more comfortable in.
  • any experience with this? http://www.wiggle.co.uk/castelli-confro ... of-jacket/ would it be pretty much breathable?

From the description it would fit my boxes... "Cant decide between hard shell or soft shell? The Castelli Confronto Jacket offers hard-shell rain protection but with the stretch of a soft shell. Our new Torrent 2L Stretch fabric offers total waterproofness with outstanding stretch and good breathability, making this an ideal jacket for just about all your winter or spring riding. We’ve added a waterproof zipper, high collar and external seam taping to keep the water out, while vents help prevent overheating. Safety is a concern, and we’ve added reflective tape for 360-degree nighttime visibility the Castelli Confronto Jacket"
  • Gabba Jacket!

Nothing else really compares! Even wiggo yesterday was wearing one with a gilet on top so it wasn't on show!
I bought one a few weeks ago and have been really impressed so far!

I'll keep banging on about this (until I get bored) but just because it's black doesn't mean it's a Gabba!

  • My personal preference is the Endura Windchill Gilet. It's not a jacket but it keeps my body warm and dry all year. Combined with a decent pair of arm warmers it's all I needed last winter (cycling and training every day down to minus a few).

Forget waterproofing and go with an Assos Habu IMO, take a waterproof packable jacket for the odd time you'll be riding in the rain.

  • I have ordered this one in black (not available anymore) : http://www.wiggle.co.uk/giordana-forma- ... of-jacket/

The price seems to be really good compared to other stuff. Just hope it fits well :-)

Ive just recieved a Sugoi Men's RS Zero Jacket from amazon and I am very impressed with it.
It has a very good quality thick material (very much a Jacket, not a jersey) with good zips and a good 'Race' fit.
It looks better than it does in the photos.
Should be ideal for the cold of winter.
When I ordered it last weekend the price was at a very low £77 for a medium in Black, well below the RRP for this jacket.
They still have some at £87, dependent on size/colour, which is still a good price for such a quality jacket.

  • interesting thread, was thinking about the castelli thermosuit rather than getting a 'good' autumn-winter' jacket because cost sounds good for jacket/bottoms combined, but consensus her seems to be for the Gabba, anyone tried/got the thermosuit, from what i've read possibly not as warm or waterproof as the Gabba?

Gabba is on offer at £138 at hargroves. I wouldn't call that incredibly expensive for a waterproof breathable gore tex garment.

Particularly when mrs carrock has just got A £200 Paul smith purse that looks like a 5 year olds art project
  • I was looking at the castelli sanremo thermosuit as well. I would love to have it in my wardrobe but for my finances at the moment it wouldn't be the best purchase I think. For the cash I could have a good jacket and two pairs of unpadded bibs, which would be a lot more versatile, and I've read that if it rains you will get really soaked in the sanremo.

I just received my Giordana Forma Red Carbon Jacket. It's an amazing piece of kit!! I couldn't have been more pleased with the purchase at that price. Actually the Castelli Espresso jacket at £220 looks almost identical and has the same properties. Despite the waist not being super tight as I like it fits great (size XL and I'm 190cm, 80kg). The quality of the material also seems excellent. Compared to other stuff I've tried in shops in the past week it fits and feels so much better and the quality is real top end too!!

Hope it feels the same on the bike and keeps me warm, but by looking at this jacket I doubt it will cause any problems :D
