So competed in my first TT ever yesterday.. Really enjoyed it!! It was 25km on a quiet road... No hills just a bit up and down.. Headwind out and a tailwind back.. Was only very small though.. But I did a time of 41:35... Is this any good? I was on a stock scenero with a pair of zipp 60s..Nothing else aero that would give me an advantage... I am only 15 so I think I did well.. Finished 4th.. Was a club event and the winner was an adult who got 39:40 with the full TT kit( helmet, bike, wheels etc) Anyways was this a good time for my first ever TT of the distance? Thanks

You got 4th and you were 2mins behind the winning time - I think that's probably all anyone can say, tbh. At 15, your age should not be a limiter at that kind of distance. I know of 15 year-olds (youth As) who are winning 3/4 crits.

The important thing is that you keep at it. What you have now is a time to improve on (ie your time) and a time to aim for (ie the winner's time).

Not bad. 25kms is an unusual distance - your average speed was 22.41 mph

Well, it takes me about 55 minutes to do that distance, so as far as I'm concerned you're pretty damn quick.

As imposter says, only compare against the competition on the day.

However speed wise, anyone decent on a flat course will be getting on towards 30mph average on a 25 mile TT.

Blimey, it depends what you mean by 'decent' i guess. (or 'getting on towards').

By decent I mean top few in an open (or sometimes even top ten in a popular open), and I mean 28.5-30 mph

Clearly. I know how good a 30mph 25 is. I'm not sure the OP is aiming at the top riders in the country just yet!
  • this has been bugging me partly by the mixed response, do you mean 25km or 40km is 25miles?

Given that the national 25 mile record currently stands at 45:54 - and given that his time of 41:34 only got him 4th place, let's assume he means 25km.. ;)

I was thinking he meant 25k too but for some reason lots of people assumed he was talking about a 25mile TT

The answers don't change. 30 mph is decent for 10 miles, or 25 miles, or 25k, whatever, its a benchmark for fast times.

  • Lol okgo, you love pissing on other people's chips, don't you?

Op, thats an epic first time. Although okgo claims that 30mph is merely "getting on for a good time", in our club 10 miler, the winner is normally between 20 and 21 minutes - and that's including several blokes who have ridden for years, and one reigning world champion paracyclist. It's still a benchmark to aim for, but it's a benchmark of where to aspire to - more like an a* than the c that okgo is implying.

Every club of any size will have people up at that level - it's a good place to aim for and no doubt OP will get there. I wasn't pissing on chips, just being straight - much more useful

bare in mind that he op was on a standard road bike, if you could average 30mph on a stock road bike you would be pro. Non of us can say if it was a good time for you, just get out there train and race more and you will see improvements
