Odd shaped head...

I have a bit of a problem with my head.. It's like a rugby ball, rather long and narrow. This makes finding a helmet that fits a bit of a problem.. I currently have a very old, cheap thing that does the job, now I am putting more miles in I want to invest in something a bit better. However, I don't want to look like I have a mushroom balancing on top of my head..! I tried on a boardman which gave me the undesirable mushroom look, I haven't hat much luck with giro either..

Anyone have any advice on brands that make helmets to suit rugby ball heads?!

  • Bell tend to do a little longer and narrower shapes. There are others as well I just can't remember which. I'm sure other posters will chime in with more options.
  • Thread is useless without pics
I'm sorry you don't believe in miracles
  • Helmets tend to give me the same look, I went for the Kask k50 evo which looked the best on me. (The other Kask helmets seemed to go with the "one size fits all" approach which meant extra helmet width vs my relatively thin head = mushroom.)
  • Apologies for the lack of photos.. not sure that a photo of my odd shaped bonce would be all that beneficial without a scale etc...! Anyway, thanks for the advice. Just FYI if anyone else looks at this thread.. I heard from a store on my travels that Lazer are also good for longer/narrow heads!! I will check out some Bell helmets too. I think it is a case of trial and error. I appreciate that helmets aren't ever going to be the most attractive...

    Thanks!

  • I've a weird head too. :( The only helmet I can get to fit is a Lazer O2 XL.

Have just bought the same helmet. Good fit for rugby ball types!

+1 Kask Mojito. Available in medium and large. Good fit for this head shape especially with adjustable rear cradle fitting. Low profile so doesn't look like a mushroom

Are long and narrow heads more aero?

Indeed, which is why TT lids look like they were designed by HR Giger.

Hmm, maybe budding cyclists would benefit from this:

  • Most hats don't fit me. Even some baseball caps on the widest fitting don't. This isn't relevant to the conversation, but it feels like rugby ball head therapy. :)

Another for Kask Mojito, one of my best bike purchases. The cradle fit is brilliant, it would stay on your head without doing the chin strap up. Can be found for <£100 with a bit of internet trawling.

I found the Specialized helmets pretty good fit as well - Properro 2 was good and is good value at £60ish

  • Ordered a lazer O2 to try out.. Thanks :)
  • Was also going to suggest the Lazer O2. I'd be a large in Giro which looks ridiculous on me but the Lazer sits quite low and looks pretty normal. I have a 59/60cm head FWIW.

My other nice helmet is a Uvex FP1 which is a bit more vented, but also feels less secure on my head than the Lazer.

What's wrong with going to a bike shop and or shops and trying helmets on until you find the right one? Then buying it?
