I started cycling in January with a C2W Defy 3 which has been...and still is brilliant and does everything I need it to do.
However, told myself that if I really got into cycling I would treat myself to a new bike after a year, so while I'm not quite there yet, these things need research and planning!
My budget is around £1500-£1700 but could stretch to £2k for that special bike. As much as I love my Defy, my heart is telling me to buy something with an Italian pedigree (albeit made in Taiwan) and based purely on looks, I'd go for this in the Italian colour scheme:

I realise there's a fairly hefty premium on the name so the spec isn't as good as a Planet X or Ribble build and I suppose my questions centre around given I have a reasonable sum to spend what should be more important, spec, frame, wheels or good old fashioned value for money. It's that buy with head or heart conundrum once again!
The other bike which has caught my eye is the Cervelo R3 Dark which for a decent cyclist seems to be a no brainer and I also like the look of Wilier bikes.
In terms of use, I'll be honest, anything better than my Defy will be overkill in terms of my needs and ability. My main activities are weekend rides and sportives.
Happy to accept any views if I'm way off the mark with my thinking.

theres a hell of a lot of difference in a Cervelo, Colnago and Giant Defy !
try as many as you can before you buy before you make an expensive mistake !0
