Hi,

So. I have currently got Bora One's... Windy weather is upon us, we don't really get winter in the south of Spain... I want to get a new wheelsets and have boiled it down to 2 wheelsets.

Has anyone got opinions on the 2. Shamans seem bomb proof but the f2r being full carbon clincher are way lighter. We do have a lot of mountains/hilly roads which are perfect for the winter training/base miles.

The price point is circa £800 and don't want to spend more than that. Shamals are a cheaper by £200 too....

Any thoughts appreciated.

It's winter training. Get some nice 32h alloy wheels that are delightfully smooth and brake well when it rains. Speed doesn't matter.

Thanks NaoleandD!! Unfortunately 32h alloy wheels would look hideous on my bike lol...

Spending a few £ more and having a hill wheelset for when I take part in sportives is also a reason...

Shouldn't this be in 'buying advice' ? It's got f-all to do with training...

So the wheels have nothing to do with training but looking nice. Why didn't you just say so?

  • No. I want to buy a good set of winter wheels for my budget. Those were the 2 I narrowed it down to... I wouldn't want to train in £100 wheelset.. They happen to look nice too... Im testing shamals tomorrow, so hopefully will have a better opinion on them..

Whoah, I didn't say a 100 quid wheelset. My best/favourite wheels are hand built 28h front 32h rear and weigh a shade over 1400g.

So, rather than winter training wheels what you are after is a bling set of wheels that's not quite as bling as your main set?

    Get the shamals.

Shamals are bomb-proof, spares are readily available and aren't as harsh as Ksyriums.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..

Not according to the links you posted, the FFs say 1425g and the Shamals say 605g front + 820g rear = 1425g, so the difference according to that, hang on, let me tot it up a sec, is... nothing.

Yes. One is carbon clincher though, wanted to know if people have a pair or have heard anything regarding the braking in wet... FFWD claim its as responsive as alloy in the wet...

Even if the braking is close in tea of quality, carbon rims wear a hell of a lot quicker in the wet. Seriously. Get the shamals.

Cool. I have no experience of using carbon rims in wet. That's great advice. Hopefully I like them tomorrow, my friend has a new pair he got on his C59... They looking Bling'ish

Carbon wise I've had bora twos in the past as well as Zipps and currently have gigantex rims built up by Wheelsmith. With good pads stopping is ok at best in the wet. They are/were fine in the dry.

I was looking at the Bora 35's, hence thought about the f2r's as an alternative...But out of budget as I plan to get Bora 2s in the summer next year!

Braking on carbon rims in wet weather = nightmare

Shamals excellent all-round wheelset in my experience but would not be classed as winter wheels in uk!
