Fitting SKS Chromoplastics Mudguards

Hi everyone,

Thanks for looking at the thread. I am attempting to fit some SKS Chromoplastic mudguards to my Kinesis Racelight T2 and have run into an issue with installing the front one.

I have followed the instructions to the best of my ability and have been able to mount the rear in a satisfactory manner. The only thing I need to do at the rear is trim down one of the stays so I can fit the little rubber caps. The other stay came out at the perfect length.

However the front is providing more of a challenge. The instructions say to mount the guard directly to the rear of the fork using the brake mount. This is where I am having an issue as I can't find a screw included that will allow this.

Has anyone mounted some Chromoplastics recently that can explain how to do this specific part?

Thanks!

Take the brake off the fork and use the brake fitting to fit the guard.

So mount the guard in front of the fork behind the brake?

The shaping of the bracket on the guard isn't ideal so I wasn't sure whether doing it this way might have an impact on moving of the brake under braking?

Exactly that, it wont make the slightest difference to the braking. Doesnt on my Kinesis with chromoplastic guards at any rate.

It cant be mounted at the rear of the fork, because the nut for the brake is recessed into the frame.

OK great. I will proceed on that route when I get some free time.

Thanks for your help fellas. The supplied instructions certainly aren't great!
  • When I fitted sks guards to my mtb I had to bodge an extension mount for the front guard as the supplied mount wasnt long enough. I'm a bit confused when you say one stay was the right length but the other wasn't. Shouldn't they both be the same length?

You ma find my original thread helpful.

+2 to the above; take off the caliper and mount the mudguard in front of the fork. If you want maximum tyre clearance, ie slide the bracket up as far as it will go, you may have to bend the top outwards with pliers to stop it fouling the headtube.

If you search online there's a brilliant video of a chap from, I think, Rivendell installing a set of Chromoplastics including bending the bracket.
