Hi, I have Shimano 105 10-speed running gear but it is a standard front. Is it easy/possible/cheap to change it to a Compact (50/34) front setup? Any advice welcome...

You will need a new crankset. How much this will cost is up to you. High end stuff is big money, low end is, well. not so much. If you stick with a Shimano crank you shouldn't need anything else.
  • A quick google came up with http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/shim ... -prod50444 in their sale.

If you have an older version you may need to change the bottom bracket too.

This is about the cheapest you will get it but unless you have the special tools for removing/refitting it you will need to get it fitted by the bike shop.
  • The special tool won't break the bank £1.99
  • I agree it won't break the bank but one tool won't work if the existing bottom bracket is not Hollowtech II. I don't know what version of 105 he currently has. It could cost in the region of £150 to change the chainset.

If the op wants easier gears then changing the cassette would be cheaper and simpler.

Oh pleease! The OP already said that he is running 105 10sp standard crankset.
That would also mean HT2 BB.

Stop making this more complicated than it needs to be...

It doesn't matter what BB he has anyway - it's not as though it is likely to be hard to find the equivalent NOS versions on Ebay etc.
    Faster than a tent.......
  • Thank you very much for the replies lads. Think I need to do a wee bit more research on this - Hollowtech and measure crank length... BTW - loved the little spat. :) G.
