X-kings or rubber queens

Hi I am looking for some new tyres for my 456 and am stuck between these 2. I want tyres that are good for off road in damp conditions but also want tyres that roll good on Tarmac without huge drag.
I am unsure of which size to go for 2.2 or 2.4 how do these sizes compare to other tyre brands do they come up big or small?

Thanks Jamie

They're pretty different tyres, and you have the Mountain King between them which might be a better compromise. RQ rolls pretty well for the amount of grip on offer. I personally wouldn't run an X-King anywhere but on the rear. Tbh, that's probably what I'd do if I had to choose between those two tyres: RQ front and X-King rear. RQ 2.2 is weirdly about the same size as X-King 2.4.

Edit: also I'd be weary of Conti's thin sidewalls if your trails are rocky. Protection ones are alright though, and a good shout for the rear.
  • Rubber Queens are amazing off road but they do drag on road. X Kings are the other way around.

Recently put the Rubber Queen 2.4's on my FS, must say I do like them. As Rockmonkey says, they give great confidence off road but you will feel the drag a bit on the tarmac (especially uphill!). However, lets face it, we all have these bikes for the thrill of riding off-road so I personally don't mind comprimising a bit of drag on the road for the added fun off it. Also, with the RQ's being such a high volume tyre they definately seem to add a little softness to your suspension. Had conti Vertical Pro's on before which I also really like (and gave a little more traction on gravel climbs than the RQ's) - I may well stick the Vertical on the back in the next few weeks and keep the RQ on the front - should reduce drag a little whilst still having that confidence boosting grip on the front.
  • 2.4 Rubber Queens are MASSIVE. The 2.2 version is a bit more sensible.

Couldn't resist going large for just 30p extra...
  • Never even thought about mountain kings because I had them before and they were rubbish but there is a mk 2 now so it may be an option! Are the x- king 2.2 and rq 2.2 different sizes when inflated?

Conti tyres in black chilli compound are generally good. In any other compound generally rubbish.

Sums it up, if its not black chilli I wouldn't get it. Out the two I'd get the Rubber Queen black chilli

I dunno, I've had bog standard Mountain King 2's and they've been great and long lasting. The Mountain King 2 is completely different to the original though and the original was poop.
  • Rubber Queen on front and MK2 protection on rear (both 2.2 BC), awesome combo (for 'round these parts). They do seem to wear pretty quickly though

  • I've recently stuck a RQ Black Chilli 2.2 on the front and have been very impressed so far (went from a Maxiss Advantage). Ride in the lakes with a lot of wet roots rocks etc and it's great. Big volume for a 2.2.

  • They are fairly cheap on Bikediscount.de
I paid £28 each for the black chilli race sport version but they also have black chilli protection for the same price
  • Thanks for the replys. I am going for the rubber queens 2.2 black chilli compound from bike discount cheapest place to get them! Just not sure if I should get the protection or race sport ones!

  • I ride fairly hard but my local trails aren't too rocky so I have no problem with the lighter race sport. If you ride rocky trails (not trail centre stuff) you might be better off with the tougher side walls of the protection version. Not sure what the weight difference is but the conti website will tell you.

do rubber queens 2.2 fit ok with a reba fork as the space between is quite small compared with other forks i've noticed.
  • Yes. I have a Reba on my Anthem and there's good clearance with a 2.2 RQ

would running Conti RQ's F/R be ok for mixed riding,Xc,rooty trails, trail centres....
    Giant Reign 2

  • Yes. I use them F & R everywhere. They are as good as anything on roots and pretty good on rocks. They are extremely good on dry and wet dirt and loam.
  • Presumably the cheaper RQs aren't the Black Chili compound?

Are they still a decent tyre?

cheers RockmonkeySC are these better than the Spesh purgatory tyres

  • I haven't used Purgatory's but I know others who do and they only like them on the front. They are more expensive as well.

Got a link for them please? Don't seem to appear when I go looking :(

  • Thanks chaps - no mention of black chilli though? How do I know if they are the real deal?

Also, there was mention of the "protection" version being more suitable for rocky terrain - I can't find that on either! (blooming numpty!!)

  • Jesus, I am so inept I am going to have to get someone to wipe my ar$e for me if I am not careful!

Humble apologies - I shall look a bit closer next time!

I am going to go out on a limb and say / guess that these are the "protection" version?

  • Looks like they dont have the protection version any more. I'm finding the race sport version surprisingly tough, certainly tougher than the Nobby Nics I had before.
  • I have ordered 2x x-kings race sport for my cube ltd sl and ordered 2 x rubber queens racesport for my 456 evo 2. Anyone know how long delivery is from bike discount.
    Thanks jamie
