Tyre size - advice please

Just after a little advice please (I'm new to cycling) I picked up my Giant Defy 2 last week and love it. I am thinking of purchasing some gator skins as my route to work involves going over 200m of sharp gravel and don't want to keep picking up punctures. I currently have 700 x 23's on but am thinking of going up to 25 or 28's can I put these straight onto my rims or will I need to change them ?

    You should be fine running 25mm tyres on your rims. Not certain about 28mm, tho. Someone will give you a more informative answer than me :)

    25's will fit, but I doubt 28's will (not enough brake clearance). The Giant tyres are fairly tough though, maybe see how they do first.
