Hello,

Can anyone advise me on what wheels to get for a budget of £150-£250

They need to be used for commuting each day. They will not be used for racing.

Any advice would be brilliant.

Many thanks in advance.

  • Have a look at Planet X
  • a rim of choice built on Shimano 105 hubs

  • Handbuilt, 105 on Open Pros would certainly do the job. Nearer to £250 than £150 though.
  • As above or do the same with a miche or Novatec A171/F172 hubset. I have one pair of NOS Campagnolo Veloce hubs left which is another option. I might have another pair if I decide not to keep one for myself how many wheels do I need? rims of choice would be mavic Open pro's but if you are more buget mined there is the Rigida chrina, not light but tough and relaible.

Miche do some pre built wheels that really quite good at the low end of your budget.

  • Do NOT go for Planet X AL30s. Rubbish bearings, rubbish support.

    Need more spokes?

Ribble had Ultegra wheels for 229 on sale recently. Have a set myself and love them.

shimano tiagra hubs on open pro rims?

shipping is 10 euros to UK if I'm correct. Take a look at fulcrum R5 as well. I've only shown tiagra hubs laced with OPros, but those are available with 105 or ultegra hubs as well. Just Tiagra hubs are generally high regarded in terms of quality-performance..

any idea where the germans get these sh compontents? They cost 70% of the price of the prices around here.. (eastern europee)
  • OEM parts. Rose buy OEM which mean distibutor prices undercutting everyone else. Shimano should really stop selling to companies that sell direct to public as it harms the whole industry and it harms the proper distibutors. That is not to say competition should be limited it should not but harmful competition is just plain harmful. Still on some things they are still more expensive than U.K sources. Also I do not care how much you ship, get wheels from Germany to U.K cost more than 10 euro's.

this is also why I stick to stocking mostly campagnolo parts as you can sell those at internet prices and still make a profit. There are three campagnolo distributors and pricing is competitive. Most shops find it hard to sell shimano kit at prices which matches what happens online even when buying of the other distributors that sell shimano (i.e OEM kit). That does not mean LBS should overcharge, they need to be competivie but, they should not be priced out otherwise who do you turn to for help.

Tiagra hubs are not great, 105 upward is all I use in the shimano range.

+1, 3 months winter use and front and back bearings were screwed.
  • There is another thread on this. Those wheels are not a winter wheelset they are a dry weather wheelset. Most people do not observe rule 5 and rule 9 and ride in the dry.

Like the look of those, Ribble have Ultegras at the same sort of price and weight. I prefer cartridge bearings like those on the Swiss ones but Ultegras are easier to get spokes for. If you get the Swiss set maybe get some spare spokes at the same time.
