Folks,

I'm riding a 10 Speed 34/50 - 12/25 and can only just get up the steep hill at the end of my 18 mile commute.

I recently bought a 2nd hand Ribble Winter Bike thats got 9 Speed 39/52 - 12/23 so I'm going to struggle on 'The Hill' and end up getting off the bike which I really don't want to do. :(

What's the cheapest way of changing the gearing on the 9 Spead to give me the equiavalent of the 34 Front - 25 Rear I've got on the 10 Speed?

Thanks in advance

Stuart

I can (just) get up the hill on my 10 speed and as I'm relatively new I should improve.

As it stands i wont be able to get up on my 9 Speed Ribble so it's lowest gear has to be similar as that on my 10 speed.

12/28 or 12/30 the latter would be a bit easier IMO. :)

Just to add there are no medals for making it harder than it needs to be on hills. :)
You need to check that the winter bike derailleur is up to the job for the 12/30 if you go that route, I have noticed some people swap cassettes with no problems and some others have problems.
  • Changing the 9-speed's cassette to a 12-29 will give you pretty much the same lowest gear as on the 10-speed.

    34 x 25 = 36.7 gear-inches

    39 x 23 = 45.8 gear-inches

    39 x 29 = 36.3 gear-inches

But you'll need to find out if the derailleur cage will be OK for a 29, as mentioned above.

Think only campy do 12/29 or maybe a mountain bike cassette but I could be wrong.
