Standard Steel or PTFE Coated Inners...

Are the PTFE inners really worth 5x the cost of standard steel ones? £2.50 steel, £12 PTFE coated.
(will be used with a Shimano 10sp drivetrain if that makes a difference)

Well spotted thanks.

I use PTFE cotaed as I have a BB routed cable that gets a lot of shite thrown at it and PTFE hold onto less than plain in my experiance, for a full length or tob tube mounted cable I'd just get stainless.
Although I paid a lot less than £12 for my PTFE inners!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0 -
Agree, normally a few pounds on Ebay for stainless, a little bit more for PTFE.I don't do smileys.

Merlin prices as got a couple of other bits coming from there.
Full length outer will be used although 'hopper has bare BB routing so will remember that one.

Nope. not at all, that is SP41, also randomly known as XT/XTR outer. Excellent stuff. SIS just stands for Shimano Index Shifting.I don't do smileys.

Getting pendant on you.
SIS's last S is System and SP41 could be said to be XTR.0 -

Just didn't realise they still used the 'word' SIS. That was the height of tech, during my first mountain biking life...and that was a long time ago. Time for a new acronym Shimano"Why have that extra tooth if you're not using it?" - Brian Lopes

I realise that just presumed they would have come up with some marketing BS with the birth of the trigger shifter.
I still get images in my head of these little beauties which I craved for so badly when I hear SIS;

And they could be un-SISed with the little knob. Notice no knob on the front shifter - I think that was still friction.0

I actually still have a set of those on one bike.I don't do smileys.

Thinking 'bout:
a) Heavy grease
b) Thin wet lube
c) Dry lube
d) Nothing0 -
Nope, it's a self lubing plastic and anything wet will just attract shite!Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0

Just a drop of chain oil or a spray of gt85 type thing is all I do. Grease just attracks crap0
-
My 2c, regardless of outers all my issues went away when I started using a single outer from shifter to mech, this may not look so great depending on your frames routing options tho.0

i was thinking about doing this as my bike is due a new set of gear cables and just run a full outer than waste money on them sealed cable sets.
i have seen an xtr cable set on ebay though for 17 which is tempting.0 -
Doing a full length outer on a BB routed front cable isn't easy as you need a cable stop you don't have....Currently riding a Whyte T130C, X0 drivetrain, Magura Trail brakes converted to mixed wheel size (homebuilt wheels) with 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm and RP23 suspension. 12.2Kg.0
