New wheels or new bike?

Maybe a strange question but I was all set to press go on a set of ultegra wheels ready for next summer and keep my current r501s for winter use but it turns out I have a little more put away than expected and now rs80 and fulcrum have come into the price range. My only concern with these is I currently weigh around 90kg and can't seem to drop more weight (already lost over 12kg since taking up cycling again) so not sure if I may be too heavy for the lighter wheels.
After going through review after review on the wheels I started looking at canyons site and can't seem to stop looking at the canyon ultimate al 8.0 with campagnolo and ksyrium elite (cf is still out of reach.... just). My current bike is a principia rsl with full 105, r501 wheels and itm finishing kit so I can't seem to decide if there is any benefit from buying the canyon other than the bling factor.
I don't race although I plan on entering a few local track evenings next year to try and help with fitness along with a couple of sportives, morcambe to brid and the usual local 30-40 mile rides.
Is there any benefit to swapping an aluminium frame for another or would I be better off buying the rs80s and maybe a carbon seatpost for a little extra comfort?

Sounds like you're confused and don't know what you want / need.
2 facts:
Canyon Ultimate AL's are brilliant bikes.
Wheels (at your budget) will not make you noticeably faster; you'll not notice any difference
I run my Ultimate AL with Open Pro's / 105 hubs, they're £200 wheelset, the Mavics that came stock with the bike fell apart after 5000 miles (rear rim cracked and a spoke went ping), they're no good for your weight (I weigh the same as you).0 -
Your right about not knowing what I want and deep down I know I don't need a new bike. I think my heart is starting to rule my head though, those canyons are great looking bikes and seem really well equipped for the money.
I know new wheels wont make me faster. The r501 have been good wheels and stayed true so I had originally thought they could be used over winter and get a lighter stiffer set for next summer but there are a couple of guys I ride with who seem quite interested in buying the principia.
I also looked at the cf 7.0 since I would really like carbon but there seems to be quite a drop in spec compared to the aluminium equivalent.
Are your open pro/105s handbuilt?0 -
Fulcrum R3/ Campag Zonda will improve your ride, IME, will easily handle your weight and you will notice a difference (I did when I upgraded to the zondas).
Only trouble is that it's not easy to repair / replace hubs /spokes/rims compared to handbuilts. Other than that great value, mine have been trouble free for 4-5000 miles, and I'm a 'bigger' rider.0 -
Decision made
After a bit more searching and getting more advice on here (thank you ugo and cycleclinic) i will be going the handbuilt route most likely with miche hubs and xr300 rims. A little heavier than rs80s but much better suited to my weight and a hell of a lot easier to sneak past the other half than a full bike.
Just need to decide on spoke type and spoke count0
