  • Or can any one recommend a good crank set and BB for racing to fit a threaded BB, not looking to spend a lot, but want something that will last

Its a game played by men with balls that we in Blighty are not very good at.
Viewed form the air, it looks like 23 men running around a field after a little white dot for no apparent reason. When the dot goes over the line betweent the white sticks with the fishing net at the two extremities of the field, half the watching ants jump up and down a bit and shout lots and vice versa.
When one of the ants fall over, the bloke in the black outfit (the 23rd man) blows a whistle and the watching ants shout a lot and get argumentative and can ve seen waving their fists and pointing a lot.
It is quite inexplicable. Apparently, there are some races and tribes on this planet that make the whole thing look quite artistic, but I think thats just hearsay and propoganda.

Standard threaded crank (Hollow, GXP, Megaexo etc) are 24mm cranks and can be made to fit BB30 frames with an adapter (not ideal as you get the worst of both standards), however BB30 are 30mm and cannot be made to fit a standard frame. I've had many bikes with BB30/PF30 and always had issues with them creaking a bit, it's not been a major issue as I just clean them out, regrease and they're sorted, but now I'm building a new bike I have specifically picked one with a standard BB, so I don't have to keep doing this. I have bought a Megaexo crank to go with it and will probably not go back to BB30/PF30 by choice. If I were in your situation, I would buy a Force GXP crank & BB, sell the Force BB30 so that the cost to change is not too big, if at a alter date you have a BB30 frame then get an adapter then.

The Rotor 30mm spindle crank will fit as it uses a 86mm long spindle which leaves enough room for external brearings whereas BB38 has a 68mm spindle which is simply too short to provide any room for anything. If you want SRAM, stick to GXP models.
Make mine an Italian, with Campagnolo on the side..
