What Mountain bike for a nooby?

After a couple of years of riding trails bikes and still sucking at it, i've decided it's time to get back on a proper bike. However a lot has changed in them years, when I first got hydraulic brakes on my trails bike it was impressive but now there's hydraulic disc breaks.. *mind blown*
I've got a Giant Acid at the moment which today I've found out I've had for 8 years and realised it's time for a new bike.
I'm after a mountain bike that will be fun and enjoyable because after all that's what it's all about. I'm not after a jump bike but I am after a bike that can handle the jumps as well.
I've been recommended the Kona Blast and the Whyte 901 has anyone got an opinion on them bikes or ones that maybe just as good or even better? (Hard tail or full suspension)
Price range is £500-800 (I do realise it's not a great amount but as a filthy student it's all I've got)
Thanks
