Hi,
I am new to this and would like some advice.
I have a road bike with a shimano 10 speed cassette, FD and shifters. What I need to know could I use an 8 speed shimano 2300 chainset if I also purchase a 10 speed RD and chain.

As long as you change the chainrings to 10 speed ones, it should be fine.

I have had 9 and 11 speed chainsets on 10 speed set-ups with no issues but 8 speed chainset may not work well with narrower 10 speed chain. Sell the 2300 chainset and buy the 105 chainset that Merlin are currently selling for c. £75

Try it first. I would be very surprised if the 8-speed chainset doesn't work with a 10-speed chain.
